NATURAL AMBER

NATURAL AMBER

Uncategories 0 Comments

Amber is a natural resin from conifers. Mineralized by time (40 to 50 million years), it is found mainly in the sediments of the Baltic Sea coast.  Indeed, this geographical area was then covered with coniferous forests, which are now sunk.

Amber is best known for its orange-brown colour, although its colour palette is much wider: yellow, orange, red, green, blue, black... As the film "Jurassic Park" shows, amber sometimes traps insects or plants that are several million years old!

Since prehistoric times, amber has been used by men to make jewellery or art objects. Amber is one of the few non-mineral substances considered a precious stone. Like diamonds, amber is the result of the action of nature over millions of years. A luxury product found only in rare and widely dispersed geographical areas, amber was one of the few products worthy of being transported over such distances. This is why the Amber Road (which linked the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean since the Bronze Age) is one of the most important trade routes of antiquity.
